"Tony DiPrima headlines the drums and he has a funny look to him that makes him look like a weirdo. He’s a good drummer though and that’s all that matters."

Punk Rock Fracas Leads to Five Arrests
TSOL.. REDD CROSS toxic reasons show S.I.R. Studios
BY MICHAEL LIEDTKE
January 10, 1983
Los Angeles Times, pg C1

They took an assortment of chains and razor blades to the show at a Hollywood rehearsal studio, but they said they weren’t looking for trouble.  They were just a bunch of punk rockers - about 2,000 of them, according to the studio’s estimates - out to have a good time on a Saturday night.  But then someone began to spray a fire extinguisher on the slam-dancing throng at Studio Instrument Rentals and the party was over.  What ensued was a bottle-breaking, rock-throwing fracas that lasted about 90 minutes early Sunday.  Police estimated 250 of the punk rockers spilled onto the street, although rehearsal studio employees put the number at between 1,000 and 1,500.  Aside from a few minor hand abrasions among the 30 to 40 policemen, all wearing riot helmets, there were no reported injuries.

Five Arrested
Five people, whom police refused to identify, were arrested on various charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and failure to disperse.  The only reported property damage was a few broken windows.

Until midnight, the concert, featuring four punk bands, had been mild by punk rock standards, those who know said.  “They were just punching each other and cutting each other a little with razor blades.”  SIR’s rental manager, who asked not to be identified, said.  “But that’s their forte.  That’s what they do.  they were fairly orderly.”

Phil Furnari, a 21-year-old punk rocker who drove from Palm Springs with five friends to see the show, agreed.  “Everything was mellow,” he said.  “it was fun until the cops came.”

But the trouble apparently had begun before police arrived.  Shortly after someone began to spray a fire extinguisher on the crowd- triggering an alarm- someone apparently opened a tar gas canister, according to Furnari, and the party broke up.

Rocks, Bottles
As the crowd emptied out of SIR, on Sunset Boulevard at Gordon Street, it was greeted by three units of firefighters responding to the false alarm and several officers who police said were responding to complaints of vandalism.  When police asked the crowd to disperse, some of the punk rockers apparently became upset and threw rocks and bottles at police, according to witnesses.

“We were mad (at the police) because they made us not have a good time,” said Nana Alvarado, 18, also from Palm Springs.

Someone even tried to set fire to one of the barricades on the street, according to Furnari.  After barricading several blocks of Sunset Boulevard, police said they were finally able to break up the crowd at around 2am Sunday.

Although there was no damage to SIR, the rehearsal hall probably won’t be rented for punk rock again.  “They’re semi-crazy people,” SIR’s rental manager said.  “I wouldn’t do it again.”

Although she and five friends from Palm Springs were stranded in Hollywood because of a flat tire caused by some of the shattered glass outside the studio, Stacy Poundris, 16, said she enjoyed the show.  “It was exciting,” she said.  “It was a lot better than the boring life of the desert.”
